The BALOLO Setup Cockpit is the wood monitor riser most people discover first, and it has earned that spot. So if you are looking at a smaller, American-made alternative like the Tilde Monolith Monitor Riser, it is natural to have a few doubts.
Here are straight answers to the questions people ask us most before switching. Where BALOLO is the better fit, we say so.
1. Is it risky to buy from a smaller maker instead of a big brand?
It is a fair question. BALOLO has years of history and a large customer base. Tilde is a small studio in Colorado Springs, and every Monolith is made by hand in small batches.
What you get in return is direct access. When you email us, you reach the people who build your riser, not a support queue. Every order is covered by a 30-day return policy, and if anything arrives damaged or wrong, we make it right. You can reach us at info@tildewoodworking.com before or after you buy.
2. Will it hold my monitors?
Almost certainly, with plenty of room to spare. The Monolith is rated for 230 lb on a 7/8" thick solid hardwood top. For comparison, BALOLO rates its Setup Cockpit Large at 50 lb (25 kg) when the load is evenly distributed.
Two 27" monitors usually weigh 20 to 30 lb together with their stands. Add studio speakers or a heavy ultrawide and you are still nowhere near the Monolith's limit. That margin is also why the top will not flex or bow over time.
3. Will it fit my desk and my setup?
The Monolith is 42" long and 8" deep. That fits two monitors side by side, or one wide monitor plus a pair of studio speakers. Before you order, check two measurements:
- Your monitor stand's base. It should sit comfortably within the 8" depth.
- The total width of your monitors' bases. They should fit within the 42" length.
If you need more length, the BALOLO Setup Cockpit Large is 45" × 9.1". Those extra few inches can matter for two very wide monitors placed edge to edge.
4. What fits underneath it?
The Monolith gives you 4" of clearance, a touch more than the 3.9" on the BALOLO. That is enough for a 3.7" Mac Studio to slide right under, along with a laptop, a closed notebook, or your keyboard pushed out of the way when you need the desk. The 28" leg span keeps the feet clear of your keyboard and desk mat.

5. What about accessories? BALOLO has a whole system.
It does, and if a large ready-made accessory system is your top priority today, BALOLO is a good choice.
The Monolith is built for accessories too. It has 20 threaded inserts set into the solid wood, and our first add-on accessories launch in late October. Threaded inserts hold firmly in hardwood and can be screwed in and out repeatedly, so you can rearrange your setup as it changes.
The inserts also use 1/4"-20, the standard camera thread, rather than a proprietary screw. That means you are not limited to one brand's accessories. Camera and webcam mounts, articulating arms, small tripod heads, light mounts, and many microphone adapters thread straight in. (BALOLO's accessories use M5 screws, so they will not fit the Monolith.)
6. What does it actually cost to get it to my door?
For US buyers, this is often the deciding factor.
- Monolith: $275 in maple, $299 in walnut, or $325 in black oak. Shipping is free in the contiguous US, with no customs and no import duties.
- BALOLO Setup Cockpit Large: about $280 for the standard version or about $390 for the Solid Wood edition, plus $59.90 for UPS Express shipping from Germany. BALOLO's shipping policy notes that since August 28, 2025, the US $800 duty-free limit no longer applies, so import duties and fees may be added on arrival.
At checkout, a walnut BALOLO Setup Cockpit Large comes to $339.80 with shipping, before any import duties. A walnut Monolith is $299, shipped free.
Once you add delivery, every Monolith option costs less to land on a US desk than even BALOLO's standard version, and it is solid hardwood throughout.
7. How long will it take to arrive?
Each Monolith is prepared to order. Allow 3 to 5 business days for processing, then 3 to 7 business days for delivery anywhere in the contiguous US. There is no customs hold to wait through.
8. Is assembly a hassle?
No. The Monolith ships flat and goes together in about five minutes. In the box you get:
- The monitor riser
- 4 leg bolts
- 4 cork feet pads
- An Allen wrench
- Assembly instructions

9. Is it really solid wood, or just a wood top?
This is the question that matters most, and the answer is solid hardwood from top to feet. No veneer, no plywood, and no MDF anywhere in it.
That is not true of every wood riser. BALOLO's standard Setup Cockpit is birch plywood with a walnut, oak, or black-stained oak veneer, and both of its editions list the feet as MDF with a semi-gloss finish. Engineered wood is not automatically bad, but it is a different product, and it cannot be sanded and refinished the way solid hardwood can. Our guide to solid wood vs. plywood vs. veneer explains how to tell them apart.

10. Will solid wood warp, crack, or wear out?
A thick, properly finished solid hardwood top is very stable in a normal indoor room. The Monolith's 7/8" top is designed so it will not flex or bow under load. For the best results, keep it out of direct heat, like right above a radiator or vent, and wipe up spills rather than letting them sit.
Wear is where solid wood really pulls ahead. Scratches and dings can be lightly sanded and re-oiled, so it can look new again years from now.
11. What finish is on it, and is it safe indoors?
Each Monolith gets a zero-VOC, hand-applied natural oil finish. It does not off-gas into your office, and it brings out the grain without the plastic look of a heavy lacquer. When it starts to look dry after a few years, you can re-oil it yourself in a few minutes.
12. Which wood should I choose?
- Solid Walnut ($299): rich, dark grain that deepens with age. The classic choice.
- Solid Maple ($275): light and clean, great for bright, minimal setups.
- Solid Black Oak ($325): bold and dark, with oak's open grain still showing through.
All three match the rest of the Monolith Collection, including the MagSafe Stand and the Pen Tray, so your whole desk can share one wood.
The bottom line
If you want the biggest accessory ecosystem available today, BALOLO is a well-made choice. If you want a riser that is solid hardwood all the way through, holds 230 lb, ships free with no import fees, and is made by hand in the USA, the Monolith was built for you.
